Those Who Mourn
Mourning is a significant experience for teenagers, impacting their mental health and overall well-being. According to the Society of Pediatric Psychology, an estimated 1 out of 14 children in the U.S. will experience the death of a parent or sibling before they reach the age of 18. This loss can lead to emotional fluctuations, social withdrawal, and academic challenges. The second Beatitude teaches that mourning is a path to divine comfort and healing. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, mourning allows individuals to experience God’s mercy and find solace in His love.
No one wishes the pain of grief on anyone else. It is difficult and painful. This link offers a brief overview of and list of resources for further study on grief in children and adolescents.
From Pope Francis himself, this message expands our understanding of mourning which includes weeping over sin as well as personal loss. Without sorrow, could there ever be true contrition?
