A Christmas Carol

Here’s a classic Christmas tale to bring Advent to a close.

Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday story comes to life in Robert Zemeckis’s 2009 animated adaptation, with Jim Carrey taking on not only the role of Ebenezer Scrooge but also all three Christmas spirits who visit him. Though Carrey brings his trademark physical comedy to the role, the film embraces the darker elements of Dickens’ ghost story, crafting genuinely spooky scenes as Scrooge journeys through time and space with his spectral guides.

From dizzying flights over Victorian London to haunting encounters with the shadows of things yet to come, the film uses its unique digital animation to create a gothic atmosphere that’s truer to the original novel than many more sanitized adaptations.

Rated PG, this innovative but faithful adaptation of A Christmas Carol includes some scary visuals that may be too intense for very young viewers, and is perhaps best suited for older children and families who may enjoy some mild scares with their holiday cheer.
