Babes in Toyland
Here’s a lesser-known Disney classic as Christmastide continues, based on the 1903 operetta of the same name.
In a whimsical village called Mother Goose Land, nursery rhyme characters live together in storybook harmony. Tom Piper and Mary Contrary are planning their wedding when the villainous Barnaby hatches a scheme to marry Mary himself by getting rid of Tom. His plot involves hiring two bumbling criminals to do his dirty work, setting off a chain of events that leads Tom into the mysterious Forest of No Return.
What follows is a colorful musical adventure as Mary and Tom’s friends venture into various fantastical realms trying to save the day. Their journey takes them through the eerie Forest of No Return and eventually to the magnificent Toyland, where they meet the jovial Toymaker (Ed Wynn) and his workshop of delightful creations. But with Barnaby still plotting and an army of toy soldiers at stake, our heroes must find a way to save both their wedding and all of Toyland.
While this classic Disney musical features some dated special effects by today’s standards, it features a charming blend of fairy tale characters, catchy songs, and playful humor. Rated G, the film is family-friendly and is especially targeted at younger viewers.
