Batteries Not Included
An entire neighborhood has been demolished in New York City to make way for a massive skyscraper. Only one old apartment building remains because a handful of tenants refuse to leave. Frank and Faye Riley, an elderly couple who’ve run the ground-floor diner for over fifty years, lead the resistance along with a struggling artist, a pregnant woman, and a retired boxer. When a ruthless developer sends thugs to intimidate and vandalize the building, the residents feel like they have no hope left.
Although things look bleak, two tiny flying saucer-like creatures appear one night and begin repairing the damage, restoring the destroyed diner and fixing broken possessions. At first in disbelief, the residents come to cherish their unusual helpers, nicknaming them the “Fix-Its” as the mysterious bots bring the residents closer together and restore hope. But the developer doesn’t plan on giving up so easily…
While perhaps not very deep thematically, Batteries Not Included offers a warm-hearted whimsical comedy celebrating the power of community. The film is rated PG, but includes some mild violence, language, and crude humor that may be inappropriate for very young viewers.
