City of Ember

Twelve-year old Lina Mayfleet lives in the underground city of Ember, which for the past two hundred years has been humanity’s last refuge, protecting them from an unnamed catastrophe that destroyed the world above. Powered by a massive generator designed by the city’s Builders, Ember has provided a safe haven for generations, but now the lights regularly flicker and supplies are running dangerously low.

When Lina discovers a mysterious box containing cryptic instructions left by the Builders, she and a friend realize that the secrets in the box may reveal a way out of Ember. But the city officials, who seem unwilling to acknowledge the city’s failing infrastructure, would rather hold on to their power than let anyone escape the city. When Lina and her friend attempt to warn others that they shouldn’t stay in Ember, they find themselves pursued by the corrupt Mayor and his guards, who are determined to maintain control at all costs.

Based on Jeanne DuPrau’s popular novel, City of Ember combines post-apocalyptic adventure with a message about the importance of curiosity, courage, and refusing to accept the status quo when something is clearly wrong. Rated PG, the film is family-friendly, but contains some tense moments and mild peril that might frighten very young viewers.
