Though Caroll found his calling on Sesame Street, his journey was not always easy. With early setbacks both professional and personal, he faced self-doubt and discouragement, and had to continuously contend with the extensive physical demands of the full-body puppet. Still, the role ultimately brought countless joys, and the film follows Caroll as he reflects on a life well spent as the giant bird.

Though Caroll Spinney passed away in 2019, I Am Big Bird offers a warm and moving portrait of a man whose dedication touched the lives of millions of children around the world. Anyone who grew up watching Sesame Street, along with any Muppet fans, will find it especially meaningful. The film is not officially rated, but while it is largely gentle and family friendly, it does briefly touch on some difficult subjects including abuse and depression, making it better suited for older viewers.
