Letters to God

Eight-year-old Tyler’s battle with brain cancer has upended normal family life. His mother struggles to stay strong while watching her son suffer, while his older brother misses the active life they used to share. A child of strong faith, Tyler copes by writing letters to God, placing them in his mailbox as he would an ordinary letter. In these letters, Tyler shares his worries, joys, thoughts, and prays for his family and community.

When substitute postman Brady finds the letters, he’s deeply moved by the young boy’s faith. Having recently lost custody of his son due to his struggle with alcoholism, Brady can’t help but feel inspired by Tyler’s simple, honest letters, and realizes that if Tyler can find such strength through faith, he too can turn to God to help turn his own life around.

Based on a writer’s experiences of losing his own young son to cancer, this faith-based drama explores the importance of prayer and opening one’s heart to God, especially in the face of suffering. As with many evangelical Christian films, this one is unabashedly earnest in its presentation of faith, which some may find overly sentimental, but families seeking an explicitly Christian message will appreciate its sincerity. The film is rated PG, best suited for viewers who can handle its subjects of childhood cancer, mortality, and grief.
