Miracle
With Team USA recently taking home Olympic gold for hockey, this week’s film takes us back to the last time the USA won hockey gold…
It’s 1980. The Soviet Union hockey team dominates the sport, having won gold at the previous four Olympics. When coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) is hired to lead the U.S. Olympic hockey team, he faces the challenge of finding amateur college players who can somehow compete against the greatest hockey team in the world. Brooks brings an intense, unconventional coaching style with a clear vision, admitting to skeptics that his goal is lofty, and that’s exactly why he wants to pursue it.
Brooks pushes his chosen players relentlessly through grueling practices and a demanding schedule, ensuring they’re as determined to win as he is. He deliberately keeps himself distant from the team, never trying to befriend the players, and instead aims to earn their trust and respect through sheer force of will. As the Olympics approach, the young Americans must learn to function as a team rather than a collection of individual talents.
This inspiring sports drama showcases the power of dedication, sacrifice, and teamwork in pursuit of what may at first seem impossible. Unlike most sports films, Miracle subtly acknowledges that despite all the human effort and hard work, there seems to remain something supernatural about reaching the unreachable, hence the title. The film is rated PG, but includes some sports violence and mild language.
