Here’s an oft overlooked Disney classic from the 80s.
On the busy streets of New York City, a tiny orange kitten is abandoned and left to fend for himself. After failing to find a family, the hungry kitten meets Dodger, a streetwise dog who shows him how to survive by “borrowing” food from hot dog vendors. Following Dodger home, the kitten discovers he’s part of a gang of misfit dogs living on a houseboat with their human owner, a down-on-his-luck pickpocket named Fagin who’s deep in debt to the menacing loan shark Sykes.
The kitten, now named Oliver, settles into life with his canine companions until a chance encounter leads to his adoption by a wealthy young girl named Jenny. Though Oliver enjoys his new life of luxury, his former friends believe he’s been catnapped and stage a rescue operation. Their well-intentioned intervention spirals into unexpected danger when Sykes kidnaps Jenny for ransom, forcing Fagin, Oliver, and the dog gang to put themselves at risk to save her.
Disney’s modern retelling of Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” blends humor, action, and heart with a memorable soundtrack featuring Billy Joel and Bette Midler. Rated G, Oliver and Company offers a perfect introduction to the classic story with just enough excitement and emotion to engage the whole family.
