Remember the Titans

It’s 1971, and racial tensions are high when a Virginia city’s high schools are forced to integrate. Successful black coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is hired to lead the Titans, replacing the beloved white coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton), who is demoted to assistant. When the team begins training, players inevitably clash with racial hostilities, distrust, and egotistic competition.

Coach Boone responds with iron discipline, demanding that the players see and treat each other as individuals. Slowly, the players begin to break down barriers as they learn to work together, forming friendships through shared experiences, including grueling workouts, shared musical tastes, and moments of humor. As the Titans battle their way through an undefeated season, they find themselves battling more than just opposing teams, such as corrupt officials and a school board determined to see the new coach fail.

An inspirational sports drama, Remember the Titans tells the true story of how a high school football team helped bring together a divided community, demonstrating how respect, discipline, honesty, and friendship can overcome prejudice. The film is rated PG, but some distressing dramatic situations, as well as some mild language, including racial slurs, may make it better suited for older children who may better understand its historical context.
