Ride Like a Girl
“The only thing that matters is the odds you give yourself.”
This week’s film tells the true story of Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win Australia’s prestigious Melbourne Cup in 2015.
From an early age, Michelle dreams of winning the country’s premier horse race: the Melbourne Cup. The youngest in a large Catholic family, she grows up on a farm, where she spends countless hours with horses, learning about the sport of horse racing from her supportive father and older siblings.
But as Michelle grows older without forgetting her wildly optimistic dream, support from her family seems to wane; her father wants her to be patient and continue training, while a family tragedy reminds her just how dangerous horse racing can be. On top of all that, hardly anyone in the male-dominated sport realistically imagines that a woman could ever win the nation’s most famous horse race.
In addition to being an inspiring sports biopic showcasing the power of perseverance, Ride Like a Girl also showcases the importance of family. The film is rated PG and is family-friendly.
