The Black Cauldron

Here’s an often overlooked dark fantasy from Disney, featuring a spooky tone appropriate for the Halloween season…

In the mythical land of Prydain, young Taran dreams of becoming a great warrior, rather than what he is: an assistant pig-keeper. But the boy soon gets a chance at his dream when he’s thrust into a quest to stop the evil Horned King from finding the legendary Black Cauldron, a mystical artifact that would allow him to raise an army of undead warriors.

Along the way, Taran is joined by a princess, a bumbling bard, and a mischievous creature called Gurgi. As the group races against time to stop the Horned King’s evil plans, Taran must learn that true heroism isn’t about the fame and glory he dreamed of, but about courage and sacrifice.

Adapted from Lloyd Alexander’s beloved Chronicles of Prydain novels, The Black Cauldron is perhaps Disney’s darkest animated feature. The film is rated PG, but does feature some scary imagery, such as its skeletal villain and undead warriors.
