The Borrowers
Beneath the floorboards of a cozy home lives the Clock family, tiny people who survive by “borrowing” small items from the humans living above. While sneaking out one night, the young Arrietty Clock is caught by a human boy. The two are quick to form a friendship as the boy shares the unfortunate news that their house is scheduled to be demolished thanks to a scheming lawyer (John Goodman) who plans to build apartments in its place.
When the boy tries to help the Clock family move with him to a new place, Arrietty and her little brother are separated from their parents. Planning what to do next, Arrietty realizes she may be able to put a stop to the crooked lawyer’s plans and save the house from destruction. But doing so will send her, her family, and the human boy on the wildest adventure of their lives.
Loosely based on Mary Norton’s classic children’s book, this 1997 adaptation offers light-hearted family-friendly fun, prioritizing a feel-good zany adventure over an exploration of deep themes. The film is rated PG, featuring some slapstick violence and mild crude humor.
