The Little Prince
A highly structured little girl finds her life turned upside down when she meets her eccentric elderly neighbor, a retired Aviator who shares with her the story of his encounter with the Little Prince – a mysterious boy from a tiny asteroid who taught him the importance of seeing with one’s heart. As the girl’s mother pushes her toward a rigidly planned future at an elite academy, the Aviator’s whimsical tales begin awakening her to the magic of childhood and imagination she’s been missing.
When the Aviator falls ill, the girl embarks on her own extraordinary journey to find the Little Prince, only to discover he has grown up to become “Mr. Prince,” a joyless adult who has forgotten his own story. In a world where adults have captured the stars and eliminated wonder, she must help him remember who he truly is and restore magic to the universe.
This innovative adaptation from 2015 weaves together computer animation and stop-motion sequences to explore themes about the importance of childhood wonder and the danger of losing sight of what truly matters in life. While the film admittedly takes a rather vague approach to its themes of mortality and the afterlife, its deeper messages about keeping the spirit of childhood alive as we grow older may resonate with older viewers. Rated PG, the movie offers a thought-provoking remix of Saint-Exupéry’s beloved classic that, despite taking creative liberties with the source material, captures the spirit of the book’s central message about seeing with the heart rather than just the eyes.
