The Perfect Game
In 1957 Mexico, a group of poor boys discover a baseball in the dirt and take it as a sign to pursue their dream of playing organized baseball. With the encouragement of their local priest and the reluctant coaching of César, a former Cardinals clubhouse attendant, the boys form the city’s first Little League team. Despite never having owned proper baseball equipment and having no proper field to practice on, the boys rely on César’s knowledge of the game and their own determination. After earning their Little League charter, they set off for their first tournament in Texas with only three-day visas, expecting to lose and return home quickly.
Instead, the scrappy underdogs start winning game after game, defying expectations as they advance through regional and state tournaments. But their journey north through the American South brings them face-to-face with the harsh realities of 1950s prejudices, such as “whites only” signs, service refusals, and racial slurs from opposing fans, testing their willpower.
Based on the true story of the first non-U.S. team to win the Little League World Series championship (and, to date, play the only perfect game in an LLWS championship), The Perfect Game offers an inspiring underdog tale that celebrates perseverance while exploring how lessons in baseball can apply to other areas of life, from family relationships to dealing with prejudice. The film also features a refreshing portrayal of faith, such as how the boys keep perspective on their success by insisting on prayer before each game. Rated PG and family friendly.
