The Pride of the Yankees
This week’s film is a classic from the 40s that celebrates the life of baseball legend Lou Gehrig.
Lou grows up in New York City as the son of hardworking immigrants who dream of him becoming an engineer. Though he excels at baseball, Lou initially pursues his education to honor his mother’s wishes. But when his talent catches the attention of the New York Yankees, Lou ultimately embraces his love for the game, signing with the team and beginning one of baseball’s most legendary careers.
As Lou rises to become one of the greatest players in baseball history, he meets a spirited woman who becomes his devoted wife and biggest supporter. Together they share years of triumph and happiness as Lou earns his nickname “The Iron Horse” for playing in a record-breaking consecutive games streak. But their joy is tested when Lou is diagnosed with a devastating illness that forces him to retire from the game he loves, leading to one of sports’ most memorable farewell speeches at Yankee Stadium.
Released just one year after Gehrig’s death in 1941, The Pride of the Yankees is a moving tribute that celebrates the man’s inspirational life and career with uplifting warmth and sentimentality rather than stark realism. Former teammates including Babe Ruth appear as themselves, adding authenticity to the heartfelt film. Though not rated under the modern system, the film would likely be PG, and is family-friendly.
