True Spirit

“It’s when things go wrong that your true character is revealed.”

Sixteen-year-old Jessica Watson has always dreamed of sailing around the world solo, inspired by the memoir of another young Australian sailor who accomplished the feat at eighteen. With the support of her sailing-obsessed family and her gruff but dedicated coach, Jessica prepares for the ultimate test: attempting to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe alone, nonstop, and unassisted. Despite facing intense criticism from the media and government officials who question both her readiness and her parents’ judgment, Jessica refuses to abandon her dream.

Setting sail from Sydney Harbor in her 34-foot sailboat, the girl embarks on what becomes a grueling 210-day journey across some of the world’s most dangerous waters. Battling massive storms, equipment failures, periods of crushing loneliness, and her own fears, Jessica must decide just what her dream is worth to her.

Based on Jessica Watson’s 2010 memoir, True Spirit celebrates the power of persistence and determination, while showcasing the value of family support, and recognizing that worldly success is not the only way to define a meaningful journey. The film is rated PG for some perilous situations and mild language.
