Wonderstruck

It’s 1977, and the young boy Ben knows nothing about his father. After his mother dies and an accident renders him deaf, he runs away from home in search of the father he never knew, ultimately finding himself alone on the bustling streets of New York City. The film weaves his story together with that of Rose, a deaf girl living fifty years earlier in 1927, who secretly travels to New York in search of a silent film actress she idolizes. Though their stories are separated by half a century, the two children share a longing for connection and a sense of not quite belonging in the world around them.

As Ben explores the city and its museums, the two storylines begin to intertwine in unexpected ways, revealing a hidden link between the two children that connects their journeys. Along the way, both Ben and Rose find unexpected companions, discovering that the family and feeling of belonging they’ve been searching for may have been closer than they realized.

Based on the novel by Brian Selznick, Wonderstruck celebrates curiosity, wonder, friendship and family, and offers a thoughtful and sensitive portrayal of deaf experience. The film is rated PG and is appropriate for most ages, though its quieter, more contemplative pace may hold the attention of older children better than very young viewers.
