Detective Pikachu

This week’s film takes place in a world filled with Pokémon creatures, though you don’t need to know anything about the Pokémon franchise to enjoy it.

Receiving the sad news that his estranged father has died, young adult Tim travels to his father’s apartment where he meets his father’s surviving detective partner, Pikachu, and is surprised to discover that Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) can talk. Although he’s lost his memory, Pikachu is certain that Tim’s father is in fact still alive, and the pair team up to investigate the last case he was working on.

And, in proper film noir fashion, as they collect clues, they begin to unravel a sinister plot that threatens to change the relationship between humans and Pokémon forever.

The film offers an exciting adventure and a fun mystery with plenty of twists, but also explores themes of trust, hope, and friendship as a regretful son faces the possibility that he may never see his father again. The film is rated PG, but does include some intense action sequences and some crude humor.
