Free Willy

This week’s film is a popular classic from the 90s.

Hanging out with the wrong crowd, the 12-year-old orphan Jesse has become a liar and a thief. When police catch him vandalizing a water park, he agrees to clean the mess to avoid charges. Feeling alone, he soon finds himself forming a unique bond with the water park’s own rebellious creature: an unfriendly 3-ton orca whale who doesn’t get along with anyone else.

Jesse’s new foster parents hope his interest in working with the whale at the water park will help grant the troubled child some stability. But the water park’s owner is more interested in profit than in the whale’s well-being, even if that means killing the whale to collect insurance money.

Ultimately this family-friendly film acknowledges that it takes trust, courage, and faith to build meaningful relationships, affirming the importance of family.
