Safety

After being accepted to Clemson University on a football scholarship, Ray is eager to make the most of it, enrolling in challenging classes while balancing his time and energy with intense football practice. It’s a lot for any freshman to handle, and Ray is hardly prepared for the biggest challenge headed his way. A call from his 11-year-old brother reveals that their mother has relapsed and will be in a rehabilitation program for a month, stranding the 11-year-old without a guardian to look after him.

Unwilling to see his brother forced into foster care, Ray volunteers to look after him. Little does anyone else know that that means hiding the boy in his dorm room. But as that plan inevitably unravels, and as it becomes obvious that their mother won’t be able to return home anytime soon, Ray finds himself torn between being his brother’s guardian and remaining a football scholar at Clemson.

Based on the true story of brothers Ray and Fahmarr McElrathbey, Safety tells an inspiring tale affirming the power of determination and the importance of family. The film also examines the temptation of letting ego get in the way of asking for or accepting help. The film is family friendly, and while aspects of the legal conflicts may be over the heads of some younger viewers, the film makes it clear what is at stake.
