The Music Man

How about another classic musical for the patriotic week?

Harold Hill is a traveling conman eager to swindle some money from the citizens of a small Iowa town. Pretending to be a music professor, he encourages the townsfolk to start a marching band for the town’s youth. He also sets out to charm Marian, the local librarian, afraid that she may become suspicious of his money-raising scheme.

Although Marian is indeed unfooled by the music man’s deceptions, she’s surprised to see her little brother’s personality transformed by the prospect of playing in a band, and even finds herself falling in love with the conman.

With its conflicts never getting overly serious or out-of-hand, The Music Man offers a light-hearted musical comedy and a number of iconic songs. It’s rated G and is appropriate for the whole family.
