It’s always refreshing to see characters pray earnestly to God, reminding us of the relationship He wants with us. And the prayers said in this week’s film are all the more meaningful because the film is based on a true story.
When Joyce Smith’s adopted teenage son begins growing emotionally cold, she’s not quite sure how to help. She tries reminding him of how much he is loved, but can see that her son is still struggling with emotions. Her world is turned upside-down one day when her son falls through the ice on a frozen lake and effectively drowns, totally submerged in the icy water for fifteen minutes. When his body is pulled from the water, his rescuers fail to restart his heart. But when Joyce prays a simple prayer for her son, his heart miraculously starts beating again.
Still, her son is unconscious and remains close to death. If any recovery is possible, it is sure to be a long and difficult road. At her son’s bedside, Joyce, who’s as stubborn and willful as they come and prefers to be in control of things, must now learn to give all her fears to the hands of God, to relinquish her sense of control and put her trust completely in the Lord.
This faith-affirming and unabashed Christian film is an inspiring reminder of the power of prayer and the meaning of faith. Some of the drama may be over the heads of younger viewers, but it is otherwise a family friendly movie.
