Enchanted

Have you ever dreamed of entering a new world? Of leaving your every day life behind and encountering something new? Well, that’s exactly what happens in this week’s movie when princess Giselle gets pushed out of her animated reality into the live-action hustling and bustling New York City.

That’s right, this week’s film is 2007’s Enchanted. Starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel, Enchanted differs from our classic fairytales. It doesn’t take place in a cartoon world. It doesn’t feature talking animals – well, not many of them. It doesn’t follow the formula for a fairytale the way one would expect.

Instead, Enchanted subverts the expectations and melds fairytale qualities into the real life qualities that the setting and culture of New York brings to the table. The music is varied and vibrant. The characters are sarcastic, witty, and charming. And the settings are beautiful.

Enchanted is a joy from beginning to end. It brings fairytales to life, and, in doing so, teaches us that even the most unlikely dreams can come true.
